The New York Jets have appointed former Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn as their new head coach, and Keyshawn Johnson, a longtime NFL teammate of Glenn, believes this could signal the end of Aaron Rodgers’ time with the Jets. Since the season concluded, both Rodgers and the Jets have been at an impasse about his future, leaving questions about whether the four-time MVP will return for his 21st NFL season. Rodgers has expressed a desire to continue as a Jet if he chooses to play again.
This pivotal decision now rests with Jets owner Woody Johnson and Glenn. However, Johnson asserts that Rodgers will likely not be Glenn’s preferred quarterback. “He will not start off his career with Aaron Rodgers as his QB in September,” Johnson stated on Thursday’s edition of Speak on FS1. “If he does, I’m walking from Calabasas at 4 A.M. to the studio with nothing on but boxers. So I’m saying this with a lot of confidence. He’s not gonna allow him to have someone tell him what he’s doing as a coach.” Johnson’s familiarity with Glenn, gained through their shared time as Jets players from 1996 to 1999, lends weight to his perspective about how Glenn will approach team management.
Given their close relationship, it’s possible Glenn directly shared this perspective with Johnson. Regardless, Johnson’s strong conviction on the matter has prompted reactions from fans on social media. One Jets fan posted, “Tyrod is the people’s QB anyway,” while another remarked, “He’s not lying.” These sentiments reflect a growing interest in who might take the helm at quarterback moving forward.
While it remains to be seen whether Glenn will entertain the idea of retaining Rodgers next season, he may prefer to select his own players, particularly for such a critical position as quarterback.
