The Pittsburgh Steelers’ season ended in the Wild Card Round, highlighting the limitations of their offense led by Russell Wilson. However, on Wednesday, Wilson expressed his desire to return to Pittsburgh if the team is willing to have him back. This season, Wilson had some standout moments after securing the starting position over Justin Fields midway through the year and performed admirably in the postseason, throwing for 270 yards and two touchdowns without any turnovers against the Baltimore Ravens.
Despite this, the Steelers could only muster 14 points in that game, reflecting a concerning trend of low offensive scoring while Wilson was under center. While one could argue that Wilson maximized the potential of the available offensive weapons, many Steelers fans remain skeptical about the offense’s ceiling with him at the helm. At 36 years old, it’s uncertain whether the Steelers will choose to continue with Wilson as their quarterback for the upcoming season or pursue other options.
While the Steelers’ interest in Wilson’s return remains ambiguous, he made clear his intentions during an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, stating, “Going into Pittsburgh was a special place for me. Hopefully, I get to play there for a lot longer. It’s special because of the guys in the locker room, the traditions, the people, and the winning. Plus, you’ve got Mike Tomlin, who’s arguably one of the best coaches of all time. Even through the storm, I think we battled, and a lot of that was because of coach Tomlin and his motivational skills.”
This season proved that Wilson still has plenty to offer and can excel in the right situation. Regardless of whether it’s Pittsburgh or elsewhere, Wilson’s commitment to extending his NFL career indicates an intriguing offseason ahead for the former Super Bowl champion.
