The New York Giants have appointed Marquand Manuel, who has been an assistant coach with the New York Jets for the past four seasons, now taking on the role of defensive backs coach for Big Blue. Manuel moves on after spending time under former head coach Robert Saleh, who was let go during the season.
According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, “The Giants are hiring veteran NFL coach Marquand Manuel as their defensive backs coach,” as noted in a post on X.
A former NFL defensive back who made a name for himself at the University of Miami, Manuel was part of the legendary 2001 Hurricanes team that clinched the National Championship, paving the way for many players to join the league, including himself. He played in the NFL for eight seasons from 2002 to 2009. In 2012, Pete Carroll took Manuel on as an assistant special teams coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks, and since then, he has steadily advanced his coaching career.
Manuel reached his highest role as a defensive coordinator under Dan Quinn with the Atlanta Falcons from 2017 to 2018. He had been with the Falcons since 2015 and was involved with the team during their Super Bowl run in 2016.
After a challenging 2024 season, the Giants are looking for a fresh start. Following the decision to part ways with Daniel Jones, they are seeking a new direction, and this coaching hire signifies that resolve. It will be interesting to see how this unfolds.
