The New York Jets notified veteran quarterback and guaranteed Hall of Famer that his services were no longer required in the Big Apple shortly after appointing former Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn as the franchise’s new head coach this offseason. While it wasn’t the most surprising move, given that Rodgers led the team to only five wins over two seasons as the starter, he recently shared on The Pat McAfee Show that his exit from the Jets was more tumultuous than necessary.
“I figured that when I flew across the country on my dime, there would be a conversation,” Rodgers stated, according to the NY Times. “I meet with the coach, we start talking … he runs out of the room. I’m like, that’s strange. Then he comes back with the GM, and we sit down, thinking we’re going to have a lengthy discussion. But 20 seconds in, as I’m talking to the GM, (Glenn) leans to the edge of his seat and asks, ‘You’re sure you want to play football?’ I said, ‘Yeah, I’m interested.’ He replied, ‘We’re going in another direction at quarterback.’” Rodgers was candid about his feelings regarding the conversation, expressing shock at the abruptness of it all. “I was kind of shocked. I just flew across the country, and you could’ve told me this on the phone if we weren’t even going to have a conversation.”
It’ll be intriguing to see what lies ahead for Rodgers. He has been heavily linked to the Pittsburgh Steelers throughout the offseason but is still weighing the option of retirement.
