John Fanta Offers Tips for Aspiring Broadcasters

John Fanta has quickly emerged as one of the top voices in college basketball. During his recent appearance on The Big Podcast with Shaquille O’Neal, he shared valuable advice for aspiring broadcasters on navigating the sports media landscape. A versatile professional, Fanta took on multiple roles this past season, serving as a play-by-play personality for both NBC and Fox on selected Big East and Big Ten games while also contributing to the digital outlet The Field of 68. Lately, he has become a consistent presence on studio programs like FS1’s Breakfast Ball.

Versatility has defined Fanta’s career, and he encourages aspiring broadcasters to explore various roles in sports media before settling on a path that suits their skills. During the podcast, O’Neal asked, “What advice would you give to a young sports reporter who wants to amplify their career like you have done?” Fanta responded, “My favorite question of the whole thing. When I was in high school and college, I had mentors who helped me. I attended Seton Hall in New Jersey, where I was given opportunities by people like Shaheen Holloway. I always expressed my gratitude and promised to pay it forward whenever I could.”

He continued, “My advice to young kids is simple: Say yes to every opportunity. It might lead you to your dream path. Even if it doesn’t go as planned, at least you’ll know what you don’t want to pursue.”

Fanta also emphasized the significance of being authentic during game calls, stating, “Be as kind and open off the air as you are on the air. If you have to change who you are when the microphone goes on, you’re not doing it right. Be genuine at all times—say yes and treat others well. No one wants to work with someone difficult. Remember, you control how you treat people and your work ethic; break down those barriers and thrive.” Fanta’s approach has clearly resonated, as he earned rave reviews in Awful Announcing’s annual college basketball announcer rankings for the upcoming 2024-25 season.
