Rockies Pitcher Struck Twice by Announcer’s Jinx Against Dodgers

While the Los Angeles Dodgers hitters didn’t need any assistance against Colorado Rockies starting pitcher Germán Márquez Wednesday night, they certainly received it in the form of announcer jinxes from Colorado announcers Drew Goodman and Cory Sullivan. The Rockies initially gave Márquez a 1-0 lead after the top of the first inning, but it didn’t last long.

Sullivan was addressing Márquez’s recent struggles when he faced Shohei Ohtani, claiming, “But guess what? Here at Dodger Stadium, he’s pitched phenomenally well.” Goodman began to respond, but before he could finish, Ohtani took the next pitch deep, with Goodman noting, “that thing almost left Dodger Stadium.”

After Márquez retired Mookie Betts for the second out, he faced Freddie Freeman. Following a missed pitch to Freeman, Goodman mentioned Márquez’s past success at Dodger Stadium, saying, “So I was saying a moment ago, when you mentioned how well Germán has pitched.” However, he couldn’t finish before Freeman sent Márquez’s next offering over the wall, giving the Dodgers a 2-1 lead.

“Oh, boy,” Goodman remarked. “I was gonna tell you how well he’s typically pitched at Dodger Stadium. But this is turning into a rough first inning.”

Things only got worse for Márquez and the Rockies. After retiring Teoscar Hernández for the second out, he failed to record a third, as the next six hitters all reached base. The lead swelled to 4-1 when No. 8 hitter Andy Pages delivered a two-run single, followed by a double from Austin Barnes that added two more runs. Ohtani hit his second single of the inning, serving as an RBI and increasing the score to 7-1, which chased Márquez from the game.

It’s worth noting that Goodman and Sullivan were correct. Before this game, Márquez had a remarkable 2.89 career ERA and 0.98 WHIP at Dodger Stadium—excellent stats given the Dodgers’ offensive strength over the years. However, after Wednesday’s performance, his ERA now stands at 3.97 and his WHIP at 1.09 at Chavez Ravine.

Can we solely blame the announcer jinx for his struggles? The Dodgers have certainly dominated many pitchers without any jinxing. And as acknowledged, Márquez was already struggling heading into this matchup. Nonetheless, even skeptics of the announcer jinx should think twice before tempting fate—not more than once in an inning, at the very least.
