Orioles Broadcaster Opens Up About Unusual Food Phobia

With 268 career wins as a starting pitcher over his 19-year MLB career, former Baltimore Orioles ace and current color analyst Jim Palmer is a familiar face at the baseball diamond. However, during Tuesday’s broadcast of the first game of the series between the Orioles and the Cleveland Guardians on MASN, Palmer surprised everyone by revealing that he has never eaten a chicken wing before.

“You know I have never had a wing,” said Palmer. His on-air partner, Orioles play-by-play broadcaster Kevin Brown, was stunned by this revelation. “You have never had… Wait a minute, you’ve never had a chicken wing?!”

“No, why would I?” Palmer replied. “Don’t they have skin and stuff?” Brown retorted, “Why would you? Lots of things have skin. Apples have skin. You’ve never had a single chicken wing? That is staggering to me.”

Brown soon inquired what type of chicken Palmer eats if he has never had a chicken wing, to which Palmer admitted he only consumes chicken breast without any skin. While he has tried chicken tenders, which are usually breaded, they certainly don’t count as wings.

On Wednesday’s broadcast of Game 2, ironically, the Orioles’ production crew arrived with a plate of chicken wings to encourage Palmer to try one, alongside chicken tenders as a backup option. “Last night, Jim Palmer, we discovered you’ve never eaten a chicken wing in your life,” Brown said, presenting the plate. “We have a whole dozen from The Warehouse Bar & Grill.”

“Oh, good for them,” replied a less than enthusiastic Palmer. Despite Brown’s persistent attempts to persuade Palmer to take at least a single bite, he opted instead for a chicken tender.

While Palmer declined the chicken wing, he provided hope for Orioles fans by suggesting a few scenarios that would lead him to finally try one. Palmer stated that if the Orioles hit a grand slam during a game he’s calling, he would eat a chicken wing. “I’ll tell you what, if they hit another grand slam while I am broadcasting, I will make sure I eat a chicken wing,” he said. “If they do it tonight, I definitely will.”

“So that’s what it’s gonna take,” replied Brown, urging Palmer to make a promise to the fans. “I will eat a chicken wing,” Palmer declared. “One. If they hit another grand slam. It could be tonight, but it doesn’t have to be tonight.”

The second option Palmer presented was even more challenging. He stated that he would eat a chicken wing if the Orioles win the World Series this season, much to the excitement of the fans.

Orioles fans have a new reason to cheer for their team this year, thanks to Jim Palmer’s humorous promise. The excitement for the World Series just got a little tastier!
