Former Colorado Buffaloes star and reigning Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter is one of the most compelling NFL draft prospects in history. Many are drawing comparisons between Hunter and Shohei Ohtani, the standout Los Angeles Dodgers player known for his exceptional skills in both hitting and pitching. Just like Ohtani, Hunter showcases elite talent as both a wide receiver and a cornerback, stepping up as a dual-threat player.
While defensive backs have occasionally served as gadget players in certain packages at the collegiate level, Hunter has played both positions extensively, a rarity in the sport. With the draft just over a week away, he’s contemplating whether he can continue to perform on both sides of the ball at the professional level. “They want to see how much I can handle, and it’s up to me at this point,” Hunter told the Associated Press.
Carolina Panthers coach Dan Morgan believes Hunter possesses the necessary skills to thrive in both roles. “Travis is obviously an exceptional talent. He can do it all, that’s no secret,” Morgan remarked. “Yes, he can play both sides of the ball. That’s up to the team to decide, whatever team drafts him.” However, Hunter recognizes that his ability to handle the demands of playing multiple positions ultimately depends on his body. “To be honest, I think I just need to see if my body will allow me to take all of this and continue to take all this,” Hunter stated, according to Pro Football Network. “But I do a lot of treatment, so I’m able to keep up with my body and with what I need for my body.” As of now, Hunter is projected to be selected by the Cleveland Browns with the number two overall pick, a team that would greatly benefit from his extensive talents on both sides of the field.
