The Notre Dame Fighting Irish reached the National Championship Game, but their coaching staff felt the impact of attrition following their defeat to Ohio State. Defensive coordinator Al Golden has emerged as a prime candidate for the Cincinnati Bengals’ vacant defensive coordinator position, which opened up after the team parted ways with Lou Amarunso due to missing this year’s NFL Playoffs. Cincy’s search for a suitable replacement has brought Golden—who has a history with the organization—into the spotlight.
On3’s Pete Nakos reported on Tuesday night that Golden is expected to become the next defensive coordinator for the Bengals. Prior to joining Notre Dame, Golden served as the Bengals’ linebackers coach from 2020 to 2021, before taking on the linebackers role with the Irish and stepping up as the defensive coordinator this past season. Notre Dame’s defense excelled, ranking in the Top 5 in several categories and allowing the fewest passing yards per game in FBS.
Golden’s Irish proved formidable on defense, making a lasting impression with their tenacity throughout the playoffs. Both the Bengals and the Irish aim to learn from their recent setbacks; while Notre Dame has made strides towards their elusive national championship, they still face the burden of unfulfilled aspirations. Despite their accomplishments compared to previous seasons, the pressure to secure the title in a playoff environment remains intense.
We’ll soon find out if Cincinnati takes action on adding Golden back to their staff. Although the Bengals narrowly missed the playoffs, they remain hopeful for a brighter outcome in 2025.
