Sam Rosen is retiring after this season, marking an impressive 40 years as the TV voice of the New York Rangers. Former Rangers star Mats Zuccarello paid tribute to him Wednesday night ahead of a game against his current team, the Minnesota Wild. During warmups, Zuccarello sported a No. 40 jersey with Rosen’s name, celebrating his final season in the booth.
Throughout this season, the 77-year-old broadcaster has received honors across the league, including special recognitions from the Rangers themselves on a few occasions, before the season opener and again prior to a recent game. “How cool is this, wearing No. 40 in honor of Sam Rosen for his 40th and final season in the booth,” exclaimed MSG Networks pregame host John Giannone. “Zucc, you’re awesome.”

Zuccarello joined the Rangers as an undrafted free agent in 2010 and spent nine seasons with the team. Rosen has been the Rangers’ TV play-by-play voice since the 1984-85 season, calling many of the franchise’s historic moments, including the 1994 Stanley Cup victory. During the ceremony prior to the March 22 game, Rosen expressed his gratitude to the fans for their unwavering support, saying, “For every person that has stopped me and asked for a selfie or my autograph, thank you. You are my inspiration to be the best I could be.” His iconic voice and memorable calls will certainly be missed by fans and players alike.
