Prepare for Deion Sanders’ wrath if you dare to speak ill of Shedeur Sanders. The Colorado head coach and football legend revealed Wednesday that he tracked down the team responsible for rumors suggesting that his son was “arrogant” and “brash” during the NFL Scouting Combine. According to NFL insider Josina Anderson, a “quarterbacks coach from a team drafting in the top 7” had been the source of these claims.
These rumors were among the reasons cited for Shedeur’s draft stock slipping after the combine. To counter this perception, the quarterback later remarked, “Don’t believe the media.” In a discussion on The Skip Bayless Show, Deion Sanders talked about his efforts to rectify the situation.
“That was a lie,” he declared regarding the rumors about his son. “You know me; I’m going to get to the bottom of it. I called that team because I tracked it down and knew who it was. I spoke with the head coach, and he confirmed, ‘Prime, that never happened. In fact, it was a great interview. … That never happened.’ I told him, ‘Yeah, but this guy on your staff lied and said it did. So you need to check him.’ And he did check him.”
When Bayless inquired if Sanders sensed any “racial backdrop” behind the rumors, he dismissed the idea but noted the potential motives of the QB coach, saying, “You never know when someone’s getting compensated from another agent” to damage a player’s draft stock for their own benefit.
“Would you want to call out that quarterback coach by name?” Bayless probed.
“No, I don’t want to call him by name, but he knows I know,” Sanders responded. “I never called him; I just spoke with his head coach. That was some bulljunk. Because that was a lie. When your head coach says, ‘I was in the meeting,’ that’s a lie.”
Since those rumors emerged, Shedeur Sanders’ draft stock has actually risen, with many analysts predicting him to go to the New York Giants at No. 3. Deion Sanders expressed that he has no specific preferences when it comes to potential landing spots for his son. “Tennessee needs a quarterback, Cleveland needs a quarterback, the Giants need a quarterback, the Saints need a quarterback,” Sanders noted. “I can keep going. Pittsburgh needs a quarterback. There are several teams that need a quarterback. … I’m happy with any of those teams seeking a quarterback.”
