The Detroit Tigers emerged as one of the most inspiring stories in MLB last season, overcoming significant odds to reach the postseason. Much of their success can be credited to the extraordinary performance of ace Tarik Skubal, who secured the 2024 AL Cy Young award. Ahead of opening day, Skubal shared a heartfelt message with the city of Detroit.
“DEAR DETROIT,” Skubal began. “Even though I hail from a small town in Arizona, you might be surprised at how much we have in common. As I’ve come to understand our city, it’s evident that Detroit has faced its share of adversity that has sometimes put its future in jeopardy. Personally, I had just one Division 1 baseball offer, battled through challenging injuries, and encountered uncertainties. Yet, this city and this team exemplify resilience. The challenges we face only make our eventual triumphs more gratifying.
“From a 0.2% chance of making the postseason to hosting playoff games at Comerica Park. From a ninth-round pick to a unanimous Cy Young winner. From a city grappling with crisis to one of America’s greatest renaissance tales; we are all defying the odds. You believe in us, and we believe in you. Detroit is not only a sports town but also a city that’s often underestimated. One cannot truly understand this place or its people without experiencing it firsthand, with its grit, grind, hustle, and authenticity, alongside a community where neighbors support one another.
“I felt this sense of community profoundly at the close of last season – your presence created an electric atmosphere that filled me with pride to be part of this place. We are entering a new era of Tigers baseball, poised to create something exceptional. A new standard has been established, and we’re ready to work hard, just like the blue-collar individuals of this city. So, say what you will about us or about Detroit; we have unfinished business… let’s run it back.”
It will be intriguing to see how the Tigers build on last year’s success story.
