The NFL season may not kick off until fall, but the rosters for next season are beginning to take shape as the offseason progresses. While the NFL draft is still a month away, it is unlikely that a rookie will claim MVP honors, allowing us to speculate on potential award winners for the upcoming season. With that in mind, here are three players to watch closely.
Saquon Barkley
There’s a strong case to be made that Saquon Barkley deserved the MVP award last season, a loss attributed to the quarterback bias prevalent in the NFL. Barkley had an exceptional season, elevating the Philadelphia Eagles offense in his debut year with the team. Although he could have broken the NFL single-season rushing record, he chose to rest in Week 18 to avoid injury before the playoffs. In recognition of his outstanding performance, the Eagles made Barkley the highest-paid running back of all time. It is hard to envision a scenario where Barkley does not fulfill the Eagles’ investment and have an even better season.
Lamar Jackson
Similarly, Lamar Jackson had a compelling argument for MVP last season. The Baltimore Ravens quarterback, a two-time MVP winner, delivered the best season of his career and was named to the NFL First-team, leading many to expect he would take home the award. However, Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen surprisingly claimed it instead. With a fire lit under him, Jackson is poised to demonstrate to voters that they made a significant mistake by not choosing him over Allen.
Patrick Mahomes
Patrick Mahomes experienced a rollercoaster season in 2024. Although he and the Kansas City Chiefs secured victories in all but two regular-season games, Mahomes struggled to replicate his prior form and faced an embarrassing 40-22 defeat against Saquon Barkley and the Eagles. Nevertheless, history shows that we should never count Mahomes out. I believe he will rebound strongly, making him my early favorite for the MVP award.
It will be fascinating to follow these three standout players as the season unfolds.
