In-game interviews are an unavoidable aspect of the viewing experience. While they may not always provide the deep insights we desire, they’re here to stay. We can either accept their existence or find value in the moments they present. While we understand the complaints—especially during active gameplay—asking a head coach for comments during breaks is often the best way forward, even if those comments are limited.
Baylor’s Scott Drew is one such coach who occasionally offers insights, as CBS’s lead sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson discovered during a timeout. Though his team was in the lead, V.J. Edgecombe had yet to score, going 0-for-3 from the field despite ending the first half with four points. Curiosity led Wolfson to ask what Drew had advised the former five-star recruit during the game.
“Oh, V.J.’s doing great,” Drew responded. “He affects the game in every area. He’s playing great defense. He’s rebounding. He’s taking good looks. So, that’s the last thing I’m worried about. We had a couple of guys run something wrong, and I was like, ‘Try to get everyone organized, will you?’” Drew’s laughter suggested he wanted to elaborate more, but then he informed Wolfson, “That’s all I got.”

While nothing Drew shared was groundbreaking, his candid remark brought a laugh from Ian Eagle. Ultimately, these interviews may not deliver the depth we hope for, but they’re a part of the game’s fabric, and coaches like Drew provide what they can in the moment; sometimes, that’s all we get.
