USC had an outstanding week on the hardwood, with Juju Watkins shining once again as the Big Ten watched intently. Against top-ranked UCLA, she played 39 minutes, scoring 38 points, grabbing 11 rebounds, and blocking eight shots, along with five assists. This all-around performance earned her the Big Ten Player of the Week honors.
Following her impressive display, Watkins contributed 17 points, eight rebounds, and six assists in a 69-64 victory over Washington, but her standout game against the Bruins truly put her on the map. The Big Ten announced this honor in a release.
Considered one of the brightest young stars in women’s college basketball, Watkins ranked at the top of ESPN’s high school recruiting rankings in 2023. USC made a significant addition when they secured her, alongside second-ranked recruit Mikaylah Williams. As a freshman, Watkins quickly proved her prowess, averaging 27.1 points and 7.3 rebounds per game last year with a shooting percentage of 40.1 percent. This season, she continues to impress with averages of 24.2 points and 6.9 rebounds per game while improving her assist and block numbers, despite a slight dip in steals. Even so, her stats—3.6 assists, 2.1 steals, and 1.9 blocks—are notable achievements.
As of now, USC holds a 23-2 record, leading the Big Ten in their inaugural season. Last summer, Southern Cal, UCLA, Oregon, and Washington transitioned from the Pac-12 to the Big Ten. While USC may not have excelled in football, its women’s basketball team is thriving on the hardwood. The Trojans are anticipated to be a major contender in the upcoming NCAA Tournament next month, with Watkins being a pivotal reason for their success.
