The Cincinnati Bengals are currently in discussions with star wide receiver Tee Higgins about the possibility of keeping him in town. However, there’s a twist: while Higgins is set to become a free agent next month, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported that the Bengals and Higgins are negotiating a potential long-term contract extension. Despite these efforts, Pelissero adds that Cincinnati might resort to using the franchise tag on the standout receiver if an agreement isn’t reached.
This potential franchise tag could cast uncertainty on Higgins’ future with the team. Although he has a desire for a substantial payday, he also values his place with the Bengals. Quarterback Joe Burrow has publicly advocated for the team to retain their star receivers, even suggesting adjustments to his own contract to free up additional funds for this purpose.
The Bengals selected Higgins in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft, choosing him 33rd overall. Since then, he has built a solid NFL career, boasting 330 receptions, 4,595 yards, and 34 receiving touchdowns across 70 games with Cincinnati. In the 2024 season alone, Higgins accumulated 73 receptions, 911 yards, and 10 touchdowns. While Higgins has not yet earned accolades such as Pro Bowl selections or All-Pro honors, he is widely recognized as one of the premier No. 2 receivers in the league. Retaining Higgins long-term would certainly benefit the Bengals.
