This game marks the continuation of one of the most remarkable streaks in sports: the Houston Texans’ history of appearing in the Saturday afternoon playoff window. They were in that slot for the eighthstraight time during the Wild-Card round last week, where they defeated the Los Angeles Chargers 32-12, making Rex Ryan eat his “bye week” words (not literally). Now, they’re in the Saturday afternoon window again for the divisional round, following last year’s 34-10 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. This marks the second consecutive divisional round appearance in this time slot, showing a notable trend for the team.

Much attention will also be on the 15-2 Chiefs, who are nine-point home favorites against the 11-7 Texans, as they seek a Super Bowl threepeat. Additionally, this might be Travis Kelce’s final playoff run. C.J. Stroud and the Texans will hope to make a strong impression and potentially gain more recognition on national television, having only recently played outside the typical Sunday afternoon slot.

The unique broadcasting angle here involves Tom Brady calling a game featuring two coordinators from Detroit that his team is looking to interview, raising questions about conflict of interest. While some media figures may dismiss the significance of this situation, it has sparked considerable discussion among fans. On the field, the Lions, at 15-2, are 8.5-point favorites against the 12-5 Commanders.

Quarterback Jared Goff had a prolific season, throwing for 4,629 yards with 37 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, while rookie Jayden Daniels of Washington showcased his talent with 3,568 yards and 25 touchdowns. This game promises to be an intriguing matchup between two skilled quarterbacks.

Unusually, the NBC Sunday Night Football crew is assigned to an afternoon game, featuring the 10-7 Rams visiting the 14-3 Eagles. Philadelphia is a 6.5-point home favorite, but the game may be closely contested if the Eagles’ offense struggles to find its rhythm. Much drama has surrounded Jalen Hurts this season, with debates regarding his impact on the offense, including recent feuds with fans over commentary related to their performance without him.

This season, Hurts passed for 2,903 yards with 18 touchdowns and five interceptions, while being vigilant of the Rams’ safety Kamren Kinchens, who co-led the team in interceptions. The Rams are looking to maintain their momentum after a significant win against the Minnesota Vikings amid challenging circumstances, and it will be interesting to see if they can sustain this success.

Sunday, January 19, evening window

This matchup features a notable duel between NFL MVP favorites Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen. Allen achieved 3,731 passing yards, 28 touchdowns, and six interceptions, adding significant rushing statistics as well. Jackson, with impressive passing and rushing figures, leads in both categories this season. An interesting dynamic is the addition of Jay Feely to CBS’s usual announcing team, tasked with sideline reporting while offering commentary from his kicking specialist perspective, which may enrich the broadcast.
