While many in the NFL world have been criticizing the Kansas City Chiefs after their blowout loss in the Super Bowl, WFAN’s Boomer and Gio show aimed their commentary at different targets on Monday: Tom Brady, Bill Belichick, and the New England Patriots. Co-host Gregg Giannotti remarked that Brady, working his first Super Bowl as an analyst with Fox Sports, must have enjoyed seeing the Philadelphia Eagles dismantle KC’s hopes of securing a record-setting third consecutive Lombardi Trophy.
“I was just thinking about Tom Brady in that booth,” Giannotti said. “Tom is completely pre-packaged now, hawking products and smiling, but deep down in that robotic body of his, there was a guy that loved witnessing what transpired last night. There’s no two ways about it. He overcame a 28-3 deficit at halftime to win. Everyone is talking about the Patrick Mahomes-Andy Reid dynasty potentially surpassing the Patriots, yet they suffered a crushing defeat with him present. That inner competitor in Tom Brady, who used to dominate the field before becoming this bland broadcaster, is likely smiling and thinking, ‘Try again, guys, try again. Sorry.’”
Esiason added that the Fox pregame broadcast heavily featured former Patriots, including Brady and studio analyst Rob Gronkowski, and even highlighted a special narrated by former Pats coach Belichick about the New Orleans area.
“Part of the pregame show … it was Patriots Central,” Esiason noted. “Featuring Bill Belichick, Gronkowski, Brady, it was non-stop, and perhaps rightfully so.” He emphasized, “This Bill Belichick is everywhere.”
Despite discussing Brady, Belichick, and the Patriots angles in this Super Bowl, Esiason and Giannotti both agreed that everything about the game itself was “horrible.”
“This was a horrible game; everything about this was horrible,” Giannotti said. “The whole thing was flat. The broadcast was flat. The game was flat. The commercials were terrible,” Esiason added. “This (Super Bowl) will go down as one of the worst.”
