In a lively segment on Philadelphia’s 94WIP midday show, a caller named “Josh in Abingdon” shared his excitement about the Eagles’ triumph in Super Bowl LIX. Co-host Joe Giglio quickly identified him as none other than Josh Shapiro, the governor of Pennsylvania. “’Josh in Abingdon’ is the name on the screen; you might know him as the governor of Pennsylvania,” Giglio greeted. “What’s going on, governor, how are you?”
“Guys, what a day! Unbelievable,” Shapiro exclaimed. “Incredible win. I’m just so pumped up.” Former Eagles star and co-host Hugh Douglas quickly chimed in with some playful questions, asking, “Gov, hopefully you weren’t out there climbing [light] poles? You weren’t acting up in the streets last night, were you?” Shapiro reassured him, “No, we celebrate safely, guys.”
Continuing on the theme of enthusiasm, Shapiro remarked, “The love Philly sports fans have is unbelievable. It’s a great vibe for the city and the state. I’m just so proud of these guys.” He credited quarterback Jalen Hurts, the Super Bowl MVP, for the Eagles’ impressive 40-22 victory against the Kansas City Chiefs. He highlighted the crucial contributions of both the offensive and defensive lines, attributing their success to Eagles executive VP/GM Howie Roseman. “Howie has always understood you win championships on those two lines, and he built them,” Shapiro explained. “They were deep—there were guys making tackles that half the time I didn’t even know who they were.”
While Shapiro is no stranger to calling into 94 WIP, he certainly enjoys a special level of respect. Douglas remarked on the Eagles’ dominant performance, saying they had put an “old-fashioned butt-whuppin’” on the Chiefs, then added, “Since the governor’s on the phone, I’m not going to use cuss words.” To which Shapiro replied, “Nah, you can say whatever you want.”

Shapiro further noted that the Eagles made a striking statement by playing aggressively. “They (the Chiefs) were getting knocked around,” he assessed. “When [Travis] Kelce dropped that ball early in the game and still got sandwiched, I thought that set a tone early with the Chiefs: ‘Hey, we don’t care that you’ve won two Super Bowls. We’re coming for you guys.’ It was extraordinary.”
As a Democrat, Josh Shapiro has been discussed as a potential presidential candidate for 2028, which adds to his appeal when he casually calls into local radio shows as “Josh in Abingdon.”
