Stephen A. Smith criticizes ‘pathetic’ Democratic Party, hints at potential presidential run

Some Democrats may be intrigued by the idea of Stephen A. Smith running for President—yet it’s unclear if he shares that interest. During a recent episode of The Stephen A. Smith Show, he expressed strong criticism of Donald Trump’s presidency while also pointing out that the Democratic Party lacks a clear voice. In fact, he noted that he has seen failings among Democrats.

According to a recent poll, only 2% of voters expressed a desire for Smith to run for the Democratic nomination. While this may seem low, he notably placed just behind Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, both of whom garnered 3%. The only individual receiving more support was the former Vice President and party’s 2024 nominee, Kamala Harris.

Although Smith indicated that a presidential run is unlikely, he didn’t completely dismiss the idea. “I doubt I’ll ever run,” he stated. “It’s not me. I live a pretty good life, and I don’t want to ruin it by getting involved in politics. But I got to tell you something: the Democratic Party looks so pathetic. After this election, I might entertain running.” He further added, “I just might change my mind one day. I doubt it, but I might. Because how much would it take to beat ya’ll? And Trump can’t run again. He’s done.” It’s important to note that Smith is currently registered as an Independent, which would necessitate a change to run as a Democrat.

Lastly, it’s worth mentioning that presidential candidates typically don’t engage in serious campaigning until after the midterm elections. Thus, while Smith may not currently find the Democratic options appealing for 2028, perspectives could shift by November 2026.
