The Toronto Blue Jays have made a significant move by signing multi-time Cy Young Award winner and right-handed pitcher Max Scherzer, who was a free agent until Thursday afternoon. At 40 years old, Scherzer stays in the American League after previously playing for the Texas Rangers in 2023, remaining with the team through 2024 before transitioning to another AL contender.
Jon Heyman of the New York Post was the first to report the news of Scherzer’s signing, stating, “Max Scherzer to Blue Jays,” which he posted on X. Last season, Scherzer made only nine starts, totaling just 43.1 innings. Given his age, it wasn’t unexpected to see him take on limited action on the mound, and the Jays are hopeful he can bounce back in 2025 and perhaps recapture some of his past form.
As an eight-time MLB All-Star and three-time Cy Young winner, Scherzer has won the World Series twice—in 2019 with the Washington Nationals and in 2023 with the Rangers. He remains one of the most recognizable faces in baseball and is likely on the path to becoming a future Baseball Hall of Famer, even as the role of starting pitchers evolves through different eras.
Toronto last made the World Series in 1993 and faces a steep challenge in the American League if they aim to return to that pinnacle.
