Starting in 2025, tennis’ US Open will span an additional day, now commencing on a Sunday instead of Monday, mirroring the formats of the Australian Open and French Open.
ESPN’s Patrick McEnroe, a former player and seasoned broadcaster, announced on X (formerly Twitter) that, “The @usopen is now starting on a Sunday. Just like @rolandgarros and the @AustralianOpen, 15 days of main draw action. Is @Wimbledon next?”

This new schedule comes with both benefits and drawbacks. One downside is that fewer matches will occur each day, which may be noticeable early in the tournament. A crowded match schedule can attract more television viewers and live spectators alike. However, with the additional day, there will be fewer simultaneous matches, allowing fans to enjoy more games as they unfold.
The first round will now take place on the opening Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday, marking the only change in the schedule. “No further adjustments to the singles main draw schedule after the first round are planned,” stated the USTA, as reported by the Associated Press (via ESPN).
With the updated schedule, the 2025 US Open will commence on Sunday, Aug. 24, and will conclude two weeks later on Sunday, Sept. 7.
