Longtime New York Yankees radio play-by-play broadcasters John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman became synonymous with Yankees baseball over two decades of collaboration. On Saturday, the inseparable duo was honored at the 100th annual New York Baseball Writers’ Dinner for their remarkable contributions to the sport. Sterling wrapped up his illustrious career by calling the entirety of the Yankees’ postseason run this past season after announcing his retirement in the middle of the 2024 season. Waldman will continue in 2025 alongside Sterling’s replacement, longtime Seattle Mariners broadcaster Dave Sims. However, she and Sterling were celebrated with the “Long & Meritorious Service” award at Saturday’s dinner.
Sterling accepted the award on their behalf from Waldman and reflected on his storied career, emphasizing that he always knew he would be on air. “Thank you, Suzyn,” Sterling said in a video shared by Foul Territory on X. “This award, which I don’t deserve, honors my lifetime contributions to baseball. In fact, I should be giving an award to baseball. When I was seven years old, I knew I wanted to go on air. I never imagined landing the Yankee job, and in 1989, out of the blue, it happened. By far, it was the luckiest moment of my life. Here we are, 36 years later, with 20 of those years spent alongside the wonderful Suzyn Waldman, a person I deeply admire. Reflecting on my first day on air, February 1st, 1960, it will mark 65 years doing what I’ve always wanted to do. How lucky am I!”

Sterling is cherished by the Yankees fanbase, making him one of the most beloved broadcasters in team history. While it appears that he is officially stepping away from full-time broadcasting, fans shouldn’t be surprised to see him make guest appearances in the Yankees booth next season, considering the close bond he shares with Waldman.
