NFL Community Responds to Shocking Cowboys Update

The Dallas Cowboys have found themselves in a challenging position. After team owner and general manager Jerry Jones expressed unwavering support for head coach Mike McCarthy throughout the season, both parties ultimately agreed to a mutual parting. This late decision has left Dallas scrambling for solutions, and reports quickly emerged indicating that Jones reached out to former Cowboys star Deion Sanders. Although Sanders confirmed these discussions, he reiterated his dedication to coaching the Colorado Buffaloes football program.

As Dallas embarks on the search for its next head coach, one name is gaining traction: current offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, who appears poised to accept a promotion shortly. This development also brings another notable figure back into the Dallas coaching conversation: former New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan, who has a history with Schottenheimer. According to Pro Football Talk, “Rex Ryan has said he would have been the Dallas defensive coordinator in 2024, but the Cowboys ‘couldn’t pony up the money.’ If/when Brian Schottenheimer gets the head-coaching job, Rex could be in play again.” Schottenheimer served as Ryan’s offensive coordinator in New York from 2009 to 2011, which explains why Ryan could be in the mix once more.

Fans took to social media to express their reactions to the news. One Twitter user remarked, “From the guy who had already packed his bags to return to Jersey as HC, this makes a little more sense… I mean if you’re going to burn the franchise down with Schottenheimer at the helm, why not see how many points Rex can give up too?” Another fan pointed out, “The fact that he will ‘make things interesting’ allows him to get off scot free in this post for being so shameless and rude. He’s clearly lobbying somebody he regards as weak, meaning Schottenheimer.” Additionally, someone else commented, “It’s 2025…any organization that hires Rex Ryan is beyond idiotic. So makes sense for the Cowboys.” It will be intriguing to see if Dallas manages to allocate the funds necessary to bring Ryan onto the coaching staff this time around.
