Nearly 16 years after the notorious locker room incident where Washington Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas and teammate Javaris Crittenton confronted each other with firearms, Netflix is giving it the Untold treatment. In a trailer released on Tuesday, Netflix announced that one of the three forthcoming episodes of its Untold series will cover the conflicts between Arenas and Crittenton that led to both players facing season-ending suspensions for pulling guns on Christmas Eve, 2009.
The episode, titled “Shooting Guards,” includes interviews with both Arenas and Crittenton, who was recently released from prison after serving a decade for murder charges he pleaded guilty to in 2011. After Arenas’ NBA career waned in 2012, he returned more than a decade later as a media personality, launching the popular Gil’s Arena podcast.
Earlier this week, it was revealed that another episode from Netflix’s Untold series will explore Brett Favre’s various off-field scandals during and after his football career. The series has faced criticism in the past for producing content that serves as puff pieces, aiming to rehabilitate its main subjects. Many are likely to scrutinize how the series portrays Crittenton, especially in terms of whether he is shown in a sympathetic light.
Untold returns to Netflix on May 6, with new episodes being released weekly thereafter.
