Justin Fields Discusses the Chance of the Jets Selecting Another Quarterback

The New York Jets recently signed free agent quarterback Justin Fields to a two-year, $40 million deal, positioning him as the starter for 2025. Despite this, many NFL insiders speculate that the Jets may select a quarterback in the upcoming NFL Draft, potentially pitting that player against Fields for the starting role next season. According to NFL.com’s mock draft, the Jets are predicted to pick Mississippi quarterback Jaxson Dart at No. 7 overall, although they have also been considering Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe, who is projected to be drafted later. Other candidates include Kyle McCord and Tyler Shough.

While this topic has sparked significant interest among fans and media, Fields chose not to engage with it at a recent press conference. When asked about the potential for the Jets to draft a quarterback and the prospect of mentoring a younger player, he responded, “I don’t really like to answer rhetorical questions, but like I said, I’m willing to teach. But I’m not really interested in rhetorical questions.”

Though some fans on social media suggested that Fields likely intended to say “hypothetical,” his response was quite satisfactory. However, the question itself could have been phrased more appropriately, as the “nipping at your heels” metaphor might lead to a defensive reaction. Jets fans, who hoped that their quarterback drama had concluded following the unfruitful Aaron Rodgers era, may find themselves facing more uncertainty.
