Ian Eagle shares whether his wife is cheering for him or their son Noah at the Sports Emmys.

The 2025 Sports Emmy nominations are out, featuring Ian Eagle and his son Noah Eagle vying for the Outstanding Play-By-Play Personality award. Both had remarkable years in 2024, with Ian calling his first men’s Final Four and covering the NBA playoffs and NFL regular season for CBS and Netflix, while Noah narrated basketball at the Olympics and NFL and college football for NBC and Netflix.

The race could well come down to the two Eagles. In an appearance on The Zach Gelb Show, Ian addressed the competition with his characteristic humor, quipping, “Is it strange that my wife is rooting hard for Joe Davis?”

Rounding out the nominees are NBC’s Mike Tirico and ESPN’s Mike Breen. Breen has won three times, while Tirico claimed victories in 2022 and 2023 as a studio host for the Tokyo and Beijing Olympics. Notably, neither Eagle has secured a win yet.

“I was thinking about just grounding him that day,” Ian joked, “so that he can’t even go, and he can’t win.” However, he also expressed that being nominated alongside his son was more rewarding personally than the prospect of winning a trophy, stating, “It’s really cool. It’s just really an amazing thing … it’s all felt like a dream.”

The winners will be revealed on May 20. Later this year, both Eagles will embark on a new chapter in NBA broadcasting with the league’s 11-year deal involving ESPN, Amazon, and NBC. Ian will serve as a top announcer on Amazon’s coverage, while Noah continues as the No. 2 announcer at NBC under Tirico. As 2024 proved, they may well reunite for Netflix’s Christmas Day NFL showcase.

While father-son partnerships in sports media are not unheard of, it is uncommon for both to hold prominent roles simultaneously, especially as leaders in their field.
