Can Tony Reali Take Over for Ernie Johnson on Inside the NBA?

As Around the Horn approaches the conclusion of its impressive run on ESPN, host Tony Reali’s future remains uncertain yet promising. This week, he joined the Awful Announcing Podcast, where he celebrated Around the Horn and shared insights on his loyalty to PTI, his connections with Max Kellerman and Jay Mariotti, and his future in media.

During the conversation, Reali confirmed that his contract with ESPN will expire this summer. For the first time in his career, he is contemplating free agency, a departure from his previous commitment to Around the Horn. As he navigates his future, he reflects on the content he enjoys consuming. “Who am I in this industry? I’m a host, I’m not an analyst, so now I have to apply myself differently, and I’m comfortable with that,” Reali stated, expressing admiration for Ernie Johnson’s commendable career and conversational hosting style.

Reali also shared insights with Jimmy Traina of Sports Illustrated, indicating that NFL RedZone intrigues him. However, he clarified that he was referring to the show’s model for other television formats and not seeking to replace Scott Hanson. It’s noteworthy that ESPN could potentially link to Inside the NBA and NFL RedZone, especially since Inside the NBA will air on ESPN next season through a licensing agreement with TNT Sports. Moreover, ESPN has been exploring the chance to acquire NFL Media, which includes RedZone.

“I read those, and I get excited,” Reali remarked about the possibility of ESPN hosting both Inside the NBA and NFL Media in the future, adding, “I don’t know any inside information.” When asked about his relationships within Inside the NBA, Reali mentioned knowing Charles Barkley through their mutual friend, Michael Wilbon, emphasizing the enjoyable dynamics of television hosting. “I know what they do on television and what Ernie does with them is the basis of how I like doing TV, that’s relatable, unpredictable television,” he elaborated.

As Reali embarks on contract negotiations, he expressed that ESPN likely understands his interest in numerous roles, particularly with Inside the NBA, which may soon have a vacancy if Ernie Johnson retires. While Adam Lefkoe is considered a top candidate to succeed Johnson, Inside the NBA’s potential move to ESPN might shift those plans. Should Reali secure a new deal with ESPN, it will be fascinating to see if he has the chance to work alongside Johnson as his understudy. Although energetic and entertaining, Reali has consistently aimed to highlight others rather than overshadow them—a rare trait in television. After hosting Around the Horn for 21 years, he has managed to remain humble and focused on collective success.
