Schoening shared his own thoughts on his retirement, stating, “It’s difficult to walk away from a job that has provided so many fond memories and meaningful relationships, but it’s time for me to step back from full-time broadcasting to pursue interests like mentorship, volunteer work, and spending time with family,” as reported by Michael Karlis of the San Antonio Current.
During his time behind the mic, Schoening called some of the greatest moments in Spurs history, including four NBA Championships (2003, 2005, 2007, and 2014) and another trip to the NBA Finals in 2013. His first year with the Spurs coincided with Tony Parker’s rookie season, and Manu Ginóbili joined the franchise the following year, forming San Antonio’s “Big Three” alongside Tim Duncan, all while Schoening provided the commentary through it all. In recognition of his contributions, Schoening was inducted into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame in 2022.
