Renowned NHL play-by-play announcer Sam Rosen is set to conclude his illustrious career at the end of the 2024-25 season, wrapping up four decades of calling New York Rangers games on TV. The hockey community has already offered numerous tributes to Rosen, but a particularly special national event is scheduled for next Wednesday. He will reunite with his former broadcast partner, John “JD” Davidson, as they team up for a national NHL on TNT broadcast of the Rangers’ matchup against the Philadelphia Flyers:

According to a release from TNT Sports, the legendary duo of Sam Rosen and John Davidson will reunite in the broadcast booth for the New York Rangers’ presentation against the Philadelphia Flyers on April 9 at 7:30 p.m. ET. Rosen and Davidson will call the action, reuniting one of hockey’s most celebrated broadcast pairs. Last August, Rosen announced his retirement set for the conclusion of the 2024-25 season. The iconic voice of the New York Rangers on MSG Networks for 40 years, Rosen partnered with Davidson in the booth from 1986 to 2006, creating unforgettable moments, including their famous call of the Rangers’ Stanley Cup victory in 1994.
This game, which is among the last five for the Rangers—currently two points behind the Eastern Conference playoffs—will be a national exclusive. As a result, Rosen typically wouldn’t be calling it for MSG, making it a special opportunity for him to engage with a national audience alongside his former collaborator, Davidson. Their partnership in the local broadcast booth spanned two decades, and both have garnered numerous accolades, including the Hockey Hall of Fame’s Foster Hewitt Memorial Award in 2009 and 2016, respectively. Beyond their local broadcasts, Rosen has worked for ESPN, UPI (where he recruited a young Keith Olbermann), NHL Radio, the NFL on Fox, and boxing for MSG. Meanwhile, Davidson has served as a national hockey commentator in both Canada and the U.S. and is known for his time as an executive with the Rangers, Columbus Blue Jackets, and St. Louis Blues. It’s exciting to witness their reunion in this broadcast.
