Hey now! Did first-year New York Yankees radio voice Dave Sims get his home run call from Howard Stern? While Sims may be new to the Yankees radio booth this season, his home run call isn’t novel; the 72-year-old former WFAN host has used ‘Hey now’ throughout his broadcasting career with the Seattle Mariners, even adopting it as the title of his podcast launched last year. Stern, however, recently found out he isn’t the only ‘Hey now’ enthusiast in New York.

“There’s a guy who announces for Major League Baseball, Dave Sims. Whenever someone hits a home run now he says, ‘Hey now,’” Stern mentioned on his SiriusXM Radio show this week. Known for his long-standing use of the phrase as a tribute to The Larry Sanders Show, Stern suggested another phrase for Sims to incorporate. “If he could add Howard Stern’s penis, we would enjoy that too. ‘Howard Stern’s penis!’ Well, I say ‘Hey now,’” he joked, noting the difference in tone between his delivery and Sims’ more excited version. “We love ‘Hey now’ so much. And we welcome Dave Sims to the Yankees because anybody who says ‘Hey now’ has got to be a great guy, right?”
Nearly a year after WFAN caller Dr. Joe broke the news about Sims being a frontrunner to succeed John Sterling in the Yankees radio booth, Sims is officially in his first season as Sterling’s successor. He brought his own home run call, which he affirms has no connection to Stern or The Larry Sanders Show. In an interview with WFAN midday hosts Brandon Tierney and Sal Licata, Sims shared that while he watched the sitcom and heard Stern use ‘Hey now,’ his connection to the phrase goes back much further. He grew up listening to Frank Sinatra, and in Sinatra’s 1932 rendition of “I’ve Got the World on a String,” he sings, “Hey now, I’m in love!”
“10, 12 years ago, I’m driving to the ballpark and it sort of hit me,” Sims reflected on that moment. “This was when you had a rotation on your phone. It came on and I said, ‘I got to try that in a game one day.’ And I did. And it worked.” While his ‘Hey now’ has no ties to Howard Stern or The Larry Sanders Show, Dave Sims expressed his appreciation for the publicity from the King of all Media.
