The two suspects charged in connection with the death of Telemundo 39 Kansas City sports anchor Adan Manzano apparently targeted other victims in a similar manner in recent years. Manzano, who was covering Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans, was found dead in his hotel room in Kenner, Louisiana, on Feb. 5. The coroner determined that Manzano’s death was due to the combined effects of Xanax and alcohol, accompanied by positional asphyxia.
Danette Colbert, spotted with Manzano shortly before his death, has been charged with second-degree murder related to the incident, while her alleged accomplice, Rickey White, faces charges of robbery and fraud. According to ABC News, investigators believe text messages between the two indicate their involvement in a “national, multijurisdictional crime spree” targeting men in New Orleans, Las Vegas, and other locations in Louisiana, with officials identifying additional potential victims.
Orleans Parish District Attorney Jason Williams told ABC News, “This is a national, multijurisdictional crime spree. We’ve consulted with our attorney general to coordinate efforts. There’s a recognizable pattern that involves having drinks or food and then offering to help the individual back to their room.” Security footage captured Colbert exiting Manzano’s hotel room shortly after entering. His body was discovered 12 hours later by hotel staff, and Colbert was arrested two days later, initially facing property crime charges after being found with his cellphone and credit cards.
As reported by ABC News, Colbert and White are currently in Jefferson Parish custody with no bond. The tragic death of 27-year-old Manzano evoked an outpouring of tributes from the Kansas City community, including remarks from Sporting Kansas City, where he was well-known for his coverage of the MLS team.
