The success of Good Morning Football over the years has largely stemmed from the remarkable chemistry between Peter Schrager and Kyle Brandt. With Monday marking Schrager’s final day co-hosting the show, it was a poignant moment for the original co-hosts as they said goodbye. Though it’s certainly not the last time they will share a screen, Schrager’s final episode was deeply emotional, particularly during Brandt’s farewell to his “best buddy.”
“I thought a lot about what I was gonna say in this very moment and everything kept sounding like a really bad maid of honor speech,” Brandt confessed. “I can’t sit here and be like, Peter, you’re my partner in crime. So what I will say is that I come in here every day wanting to impress you. My goal is to make you laugh and to share something unexpected. It’s quite challenging. My initial thought was to talk about what you’ll do next and tell them who you are, but I flipped it around—I want to tell you what you’re not about.”
Brandt emphasized that while Schrager is technically an “insider,” he is much more than that, notably advising his next employer not to “force this person to scream and fight for no reason,” which may prove challenging if that turns out to be ESPN, as many speculate. He highlighted that Schrager isn’t just passionate about football; rather, he is the true pop culture expert of the duo. Brandt also reflected on how the 42-year-old contributed to transforming Good Morning Football into so much more than just a conventional morning talk show focused on football, sharing the backstory of their friendship.
“In July of 2016, when we learned that this show was going to happen and that I would be a part of it, I received a direct message from Peter Schrager saying, ‘dude, this is so cool we’re gonna be best buds,’” Brandt reminisced. “And he was right; we have been and we are. I’m a miserable bastard who doesn’t like making friends. At home, I have my wife and kids; in town, I have a few friends. But at work, I have Peter. Thank you very much for eight and a half years of being my best bud.”
“Right on,” an emotional Schrager replied. “I love you, Kyle.”
“I love you too,” Brandt responded.

Sports media farewells can often feel awkward, especially when the departing talent is heading to a competitor. However, Monday’s episode of GMFB was a fitting celebration of Schrager’s impact on the show, epitomized by Brandt’s heartfelt tribute.
