Detroit Red Wings forward Austin Watson made a notable impression on ESPN NHL analyst P.K. Subban during Saturday’s game against the Boston Bruins, even if Subban struggled to recall his name accurately. The game featured two fights in the opening minutes, with the Red Wings clinching a 2-1 victory. The second fight involved Watson and Boston’s Jakub Lauko. During the first intermission, Subban enthusiastically praised Watson’s performance but mistakenly referred to him as “Matthews,” confusing him with Toronto Maple Leafs star Auston Matthews.
Subban took the mix-up in stride, sharing a video on X (formerly Twitter) that highlighted his blunders, including host Steve Levy’s repeated corrections of “Watson” in the background. Meanwhile, fellow analyst Mark Messier couldn’t contain his laughter throughout the segment.

In total, Subban mistakenly referred to Watson as “Matthews” four times during the broadcast—twice before he recognized the error and twice afterwards. To his credit, he caught himself before completing the fourth instance, so we can consider it three-and-a-half. Regardless, anything that brings that much laughter to Messier is certainly enjoyable.
