Stephen A. Smith wasn’t the only ESPN star on the receiving end of LeBron James’ barbs this week. During his hour-long interview on The Pat McAfee Show, the four-time NBA MVP took a swipe at Brian Windhorst. In a discussion about the ongoing comparisons to Michael Jordan throughout his career, James expressed his displeasure with Windhorst for suggesting he signed with Nike to emulate His Airness.
“I see a lot of s**t too. Like I see Brian Windhorst on one of these shows not too long ago,” James began before McAfee interjected.
“You guys played together in high school, right?” McAfee quipped, alluding to James and Windhorst’s shared alma mater of St. Vincent-St. Mary High School in Akron.
“Yeah, this guy who says he’s like my f**king best friend,” James replied. “These guys are just weird.”

Unlike Smith, who responded to James’ commentary with a 15-minute monologue on First Take, Windhorst chose not to publicly retaliate following the jab. When asked about James’ remarks on ESPN Cleveland on Thursday, the veteran NBA reporter took a gracious stance, stating, “LeBron doesn’t owe me anything. I owe him a lot. He has been a great friend to my hometown and my alma mater. I would stand on that.” He added, “Just know, I met LeBron 25 years ago, and my understanding of LeBron and where people stand in his life has been crystal clear.”

While Windhorst may be too modest or classy to state this himself, we will: he didn’t deserve this. Moreover, his poised response to James’ comments highlights a refreshing contrast to the mud-slinging that has bubbled up following the interview.
