Thursday marked MLB’s Opening Day for 2025, but it was a challenging day for their MLB.tv streaming service, with many users voicing concerns about technical issues on X. Among the complaints was one from Mets’ player Tyler Zuber, currently on their 40-man roster but playing with their Triple-A team:
Can’t watch opening day on @mlb.tv

We pay $150 to get a non-functional @MLBTV app on #OpeningDay and they wonder why baseball isn’t the “national pastime” anymore.#LFGM pic.twitter.com/DjW5dsflH0

The support during this time also appeared to be lacking. It is common for streaming services to experience higher user loads during major events like Opening Day, which can lead to issues. Though it’s expected that broadcasters encounter technical difficulties from time to time, the magnitude of complaints this time indicated a much larger problem, especially given the significance of Opening Day for MLB and the influx of new MLB.tv subscribers.
This comes in a season marked by MLB and ESPN’s messy public breakup, with the league asserting their value and demanding more. A more reliable streaming service would certainly bolster their claims for worth in this competitive landscape.
