Charles Barkley Calls Out Internet Trolls Over Maryland Travel Controversy

In the aftermath of Maryland benefitting from a controversial no-call, it’s the individuals still residing with their parents drawing the ire of Charles Barkley. Sunday night’s round of 32 matchup between Maryland and Colorado State showcased one of the NCAA Tournament’s most thrilling finishes, but it ended in controversy. Maryland’s Derik Queen made a game-winning layup as time expired, and many believed he traveled on his way to the basket. However, the referees disagreed, as did Barkley, who asserted that only those living at home with their parents thought Queen had traveled.

“You know why I’m mad,” Barkley began during his postgame rants alongside Ernie Johnson, Clark Kellogg, Kenny Smith, and rules analyst Gene Steratore. “People on the internet, they all live with their parents. They don’t have a job; they sit around in their drawers…there’s two types of people in the world. Those who do and those who talk about people who do. And those are the people who live with their parents, sitting around eating bonbons and Fritos.” Welcome to 2025, Chuck, where a significant number of people on the internet are not the assumed weirdos living in their parents’ basements anymore and are keen to debate controversial officiating in sports.

Steratore strongly defended the no-call, as did the entire studio postgame team, who appeared shocked to discover there was a controversy brewing on social media. While defending the no-call is one thing, it’s important to acknowledge why others might think Queen traveled, especially since it appeared he took an extra step on his way to the basket. As the debate over the call continues, one thing remains clear: had the officials called a travel and nullified Queen’s game-winner, it would have stirred even more controversy than their decision to refrain from blowing the whistle.
