The Auburn Tigers will face off against the Michigan Wolverines in the Sweet 16 of this season’s NCAA men’s basketball tournament on Friday. However, their head coach, Bruce Pearl, is dedicating some of his limited preparation time to discuss political issues. Following his team’s second round win over the Creighton Bluejays on Saturday, Pearl made headlines by advocating for the release of hostages held by Hamas in the Gaza Strip, specifically American hostage Edan Alexander.
Pearl continued his advocacy in an appearance on Fox News on Monday morning, stating, “President Trump is absolutely leading the way and he’s making this a very clear decision for Hamas — release the hostages, and there’s a chance for peace. Don’t, and there’s going to be death and destruction.”

Pearl’s remarks reflect his ongoing commitment to highlighting the urgency of the hostage situation since the terrorist attacks on October 7, 2023. While many would argue that the conflict in Gaza is far more significant than Auburn’s March Madness aspirations, his choice to address these issues during a pivotal week for his team could invite criticism if the Tigers do not advance in the tournament.
Athletes and coaches have often utilized their platforms to advocate for various causes or political beliefs, much to the dismay of the “stick to sports” crowd. Pearl’s decision to speak out on cable news—especially during such an important time—raises questions about the balance between sports and social advocacy.
