Buccaneers GM Commends Chris Godwin

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and star wide receiver Chris Godwin reached an agreement this offseason to bring Godwin back to Tampa. However, he disclosed that he was very close to leaving the team. “I feel like we were really close,” Godwin mentioned regarding his decision, as reported by Pro Football Talk. “When it comes to a situation like that, you have to really consider it. Me and Mariah had some tough conversations.”

He added, “Had some really tough conversations with my agent. Because at the end of the day, we’re trying to figure out what’s going to be best for our family. Not everyone would make that decision, and I’m not faulting anybody that would, but I have to trust my gut and my intuition.”

Buccaneers General Manager Jason Licht praised Godwin’s character for choosing to return to Tampa Bay, stating, “There were several teams that inquired, but there was one that kept writing him blank checks,” Licht noted. “We reached a point of what we could do to keep everything together and add some pieces, and he took it.” While Licht didn’t specify which team he referred to, it is widely believed that Godwin declined a highly lucrative offer from the Patriots. “A man of character,” Licht said. “We’re so fortunate to have him.”
