ESPN has made a significant move to enhance their NFL Draft coverage for the upcoming generation by re-signing Matt Miller to a new contract. Miller joined ESPN in 2021 after building his reputation at Bleacher Report, even before it gained mainstream recognition following its acquisition by Turner Sports. By 2011, he had established himself as one of the company’s national lead writers, later receiving praise from ESPN NFL Draft icon Mel Kiper as he joined the network’s coverage. Now, Miller will have the opportunity to share the stage with Kiper in the coming years thanks to this new contract extension.

Miller has appeared both online and on television in Bristol, even taking a seat on the main set for Day 3 coverage of the NFL Draft alongside Kiper. This is where dedicated draft analysts are invaluable for their specialized knowledge. While Mel Kiper has been covering the NFL Draft at ESPN for decades, at 64 years old, the consideration for an heir apparent in Bristol is emerging. For years, Todd McShay was seen as a potential successor, known for his on-air debates with Kiper. However, McShay was laid off by ESPN in the summer of 2023 and has recently joined The Ringer. It now appears that position may be passing to Matt Miller, with the key question being whether ESPN will retain the television rights to the NFL Draft by the time he is ready to step into the lead draft analyst role.
