The 2025 NCAA Tournament will be significant as it marks the last time ESPN’s Around the Horn will cover the action, concluding its run in May. As the show wraps up, it takes with it Pablo Torre’s beloved tradition of selecting a No. 16 seed to upset a No. 1 seed, a highlight captured in a compilation video shared on social media.
Torre made his initial bold prediction in 2013 with Southern University, hoping for a historic upset over Gonzaga, which, as we know, did not happen. Undeterred by his failures, he continued with his No. 16 picks despite the upsets remaining elusive. The first-ever 16-over-1 upset took place in 2018 when UMBC shocked Virginia, followed by Fairleigh Dickinson’s surprising win over Purdue in 2023, neither of which Torre accurately predicted.
For those interested in Torre’s numerous incorrect predictions over the years, Around the Horn has compiled a video documenting his misses.

Heading into the 2025 NCAA Tournament, Torre might find an advantage: he has not yet picked against any of the current No. 1 seeds—Florida, Houston, Duke, and Auburn—in previous years. This might provide him with fresh opportunities in his last chance to correctly choose a 16-1 upset as an Around the Horn panelist. Will we witness a third 16-1 upset in the 2025 Tournament? Only time will tell; however, based on Torre’s history, even if an upset occurs, the likelihood that it’s the one he chooses remains slim.
