Derek Stingley Grateful for Texans’ Confidence in Him

The Houston Texans have made Derek Stingley Jr. the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL, signing him to a three-year contract worth $90 million, with $89 million guaranteed and a $30 million annual salary. Stingley’s achievement not only sets a new standard for defensive backs in the league but also marks a heartfelt father-son moment.

“When I found out, I was working out with my pops,” Stingley recalled on Wednesday, as reported by the NFL’s official website. “Halfway through the workout, he said, ‘Oh dude, guess what.’ I responded, ‘What?’ and he revealed, ‘The deal is done.’ I was like, ‘What? That’s crazy!’ It was just surreal.” In another statement, Stingley remarked, “Receivers are starting to touch $40 million [annually]. We’re the ones going out there and competing against them. It’s great that the cornerback position and other defensive spots are starting to see comparable recognition.”

“I believe it’s good for the sport. Over time, these numbers will continue to rise, and I’m eager to see who will make the next deal like this,” he added. Furthermore, Stingley expressed how much it means to him that the Texans have faith in his abilities on the field, stating, “It’s significant that they’ve allowed me to work with my coaches, who have taught me the game at this level. They believe I can mentor the younger players on the team.”

“I’m not one to speak up in front of everyone, but I know how to be a great teammate. I guess they see that in me, and that’s what I believe in.” It will be fascinating to watch if Stingley can live up to the Texans’ investment with more outstanding seasons as the franchise aims to make its mark and reach the Super Bowl.
