Aaron Rodgers Considered a ‘Low-Priority Free Agent’

It’s been a very bad week for Aaron Rodgers on ESPN’s Get Up. On Monday, host Mike Greenberg along with the rest of the cast covered the No. 8 Rodgers jersey that has hung on the set since he joined the New York Jets. The somber “ceremony” featured mournful music and mock tributes, highlighting the end of what could be considered “Curtains on Aaron Rodgers’ era with the Jets.”

That segment effectively illustrated how the veteran quarterback’s star has dimmed, and things only got worse for Rodgers on Wednesday’s show. ESPN NFL analyst Tim Hasselbeck discussed speculation regarding the Los Angeles Rams trading quarterback Matthew Stafford, and mentioned Rodgers as a possibility for the Rams. “Rodgers is a low-priority free agent,” Hasselbeck stated, emphasizing that other teams would have priority, leaving Rodgers with limited options.

In less than two years, Rodgers has transitioned from a coveted four-time NFL MVP and possible savior of the Jets to a “low-priority free agent,” reminiscent of that poor kid in gym class picked last after all the stars have been chosen. Hasselbeck’s harsh conclusion reiterated this sentiment: “I guarantee you (the Rams) are not trying to get older and slower at the position.”

While Hasselbeck’s viewpoint may not be surprising—given that even casual fans can see that the 41-year-old Rodgers played poorly last season, with the worst statistics of his career—hearing it articulated on air adds another layer of melancholy for Rodgers, marking the second harsh blow this week on Get Up.
