There’s never a good time to get mono, but if you’re a college basketball player, falling ill before Gus Johnson is set to call one of your games is particularly unfortunate. During Saturday’s matchup between Illinois and Duke, we learned that Johnson dives deep into player backgrounds.
When Illinois center Tomislav Ivišić attempted a fadeaway jumper that missed completely, Johnson pointed out the various challenges Ivišić has faced this season: “He’s been struggling with his health — flu, mono, and an ankle injury.” Color analyst Jim Jackson critiqued Ivišić’s shot selection, expressing disapproval over the 7-foot-1 center opting for a fadeaway jumper against Duke’s 6-foot-5 guard, Tyrese Proctor. However, Johnson had a different focus on his mind.
“Why you laughing? You got a smile on your face,” Jackson observed.
“Because, how do you get mono in college?” Johnson quipped. “What do you do to get that?”
“Inquiring minds want to say ‘hmmmmm,’” Jackson added.

“In college,” Jackson continued.
“Yeah, exactly,” Johnson replied, chuckling. Jackson then imparted some sage advice: “Listen, you gotta watch what you drink your drink out of in cups. You gotta watch it.”
