Did SportsNet announcer Chris Cuthbert talk Toronto Maple Leafs forward Alex Steeves’ first NHL goal into existence on Saturday? In the opening minutes of the game against the Carolina Hurricanes, the puck entered Toronto’s offensive zone behind the net. Steeves found himself battling with two Carolina players for possession as Cuthbert noted that Steeves was “looking for his first National Hockey League goal,” highlighting that the 25-year-old had already “played 11 games over a few seasons.”
Carolina briefly controlled the puck, but John Tavares intercepted a pass. By that moment, Steeves had positioned himself in front of the net, wide open. Tavares passed the puck to Steeves, who unleashed a one-timer that beat Carolina goaltender Pyotr Kochetkov.
“Steeves goes after it, looking for his first National Hockey League goal. Played 11 games over a few seasons… THERE HE IS! IT’S ALEX STEEVES, AND HIS FIRST IN THE NHL!”
Well done by Chris Cuthbert on the Sportsnet call. 🏒🎙️pic.twitter.com/VpZVzrpHUD

This goal not only gave the Maple Leafs a 1-0 lead but also marked Steeves’ first career goal. Additionally, it contributed a notable announcer jinx to Cuthbert’s already abundant résumé.
