UCLA celebrated “Bill Walton Day” on Sunday, honoring the vibrant former basketball star and broadcaster in a fitting tribute. CBS Sports aired the game between UCLA and Ohio State, covering various honors for the late Walton, who passed away on May 27 at the age of 71. Before the game, a video tribute was played at Pauley Pavilion, showcasing Walton’s remarkable achievements, including two national championships and three National Player of the Year Awards from 1972-74. The video featured “Box of Rain,” a song by the Grateful Dead, which was Walton’s favorite band.
During the first half, CBS interviewed former UCLA and NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who shared his heartfelt memories and insights about Walton. “I think Bill’s love for the game, his gift of gab, and his affection for people all combined to make him an ideal broadcaster,” Abdul-Jabbar remarked. “I really enjoyed listening to his broadcasts; he was informed and had a sense of humor, which was so important.”

At halftime, Walton’s family, friends, and former teammates came together on the court to pay their respects. Fans received tie-dye T-shirts, a style Walton favored. With the addition of Grateful Dead music and appearances by Abdul-Jabbar and other Bruins legends, it was a celebration that Walton would have genuinely appreciated.
