Former USMNT and MLS goalkeeper turned broadcaster Tony Meola suffered a heart attack Thursday, but is expected to make a full recovery, according to several reports. MLS/USMNT insider Tom Bogert reported Friday that Meola is in “good spirits,” and doctors have indicated he’ll be okay. On his 56th birthday, Meola shared an important message: “Go get frequent check ups.”

He’s in good spirits and doctors say he’ll be okay. He thanks everyone for the birthday wishes too.

Meola made 100 appearances as goalkeeper for the USMNT, including in the 1990, 1994, and 2002 World Cups, and later played 250 MLS matches, primarily with Sporting Kansas City and New York Red Bulls. Since retiring in 2007, he’s taken on various media roles, notably on SiriusXM FC’s Counter Attack show and with CBS Sports Golazo Network.
