Regardless of opinions on Elon Musk’s ownership of X, the platform’s crowd-sourcing approach to its Community Notes feature has provided ample comedic moments. Previous sports-related targets of this feature include Georgia head coach Kirby Smart and the Baltimore Ravens, but perhaps its most amusing jab came at the expense of TNT Sports and Barstool Sports figure Paul Bissonnette.
Just after 3:30 a.m. ET on Thursday, Fox News’ official X account posted a story about Bissonnette’s remark that Canada should brace for a “national emergency” if the team loses to the U.S. in the NHL’s 4 Nations Face-Off final. While the Spittin’ Chiclets co-host’s comments sparked attention, it was the story’s headline that drew some criticism.
“Ex-Team Canada star says country will have ‘national emergency’ if team loses to US in 4 Nations final,” read the original headline. Although Bissonnette had a lengthy hockey career, labeling him a “star” may be an overstatement. His international appearances for Team Canada were limited to the 2002 Hlinka Gretzky Cup and 2003 IIHF World U18 Championship — both occurring before his NHL debut.
While misinformation may have gone unchecked in the past, Community Notes created an avenue for users to correct the narrative. Consequently, a pointed note challenged Bissonnette’s credentials, stating, “Bissonnette may have played for team Canada as a teenager in the Under 18 World Championships, he was far from a star then and could be considered the pinnacle of his career. Paul ‘Biz Nasty’ never played for Canada again. His fame has come post-career as a media personality.” The headline has since been revised to “Ex-Canadian hockey player says country will have ‘national emergency’ if team loses to US in 4 Nations final.”
Sheesh.

Bissonnette’s Barstool Sports colleague, Dan “Big Cat” Katz, took to X to highlight the Community Note, saying, “BRUTAL community note for our guy Biz.” Meanwhile, Bissonnette replied to Katz, declaring, “I just took down your biggest [American] news outlet. Now your hockey team is next. LETS GO CANADA.”

Perhaps ESPN’s P.K. Subban was onto something when he suggested the 4 Nations Face-Off could ultimately be bigger than the Stanley Cup.
