Packers Part Ways with Star Cornerback Jaire Alexander

Green Bay and Jaire Alexander are likely parting ways after seven seasons in Titletown, as strong indications suggest that Alexander’s time with the Packers will end this offseason. According to ESPN.com’s Rob Demovsky, the former first-rounder is due $17.5 million next year if he is retained, but emerging durability issues over the past two seasons make his exit probable.

Demovsky wrote, “There are strong indications that Alexander’s time with the Packers will end without him playing another down.” The Packers drafted Alexander with the 18th overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft out of Louisville, where he had a standout career. The Charlotte native quickly established himself as one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL, earning his first Pro Bowl trip and a second-team All-Pro selection by year three.

Two years later, he again received those honors, but since then, he has struggled to stay on the field, playing only 14 games combined over the past two seasons and 16 games in 2022. Although Alexander recorded two interceptions last year, they were his only two in the last two years. If a team acquires Alexander pre-2022 or at a similar level, they will gain a solid cornerback, but health concerns may pose a risk.

Thus concludes a commendable career in Green Bay. While Alexander didn’t achieve the same level of success as other prominent Packer defensive backs, his contributions remain significantly noteworthy in recent memory.
