The Virginia Tech Hokies finished the 2024 season with a 6-7 record, concluding with a 24-10 loss in the Dukes Mayo Bowl that left the team under .500. Their offense was inconsistent, averaging 367 yards per game and ranking in the lower half of ACC teams. Despite hopes to retain offensive coordinator Tyler Bowen, he departed for Ohio State’s coaching staff two weeks ago, creating the need for a quick search.
Head coach Brent Pry and the Hokies swiftly appointed Philip Montgomery as the new offensive coordinator. The announcement was made on Monday, highlighting Montgomery’s previous experience as the head coach of the Tulsa Golden Hurricane and a longstanding offensive coordinator.

Montgomery’s background includes coaching roles at the Houston Cougars and Baylor Bears, where he contributed to the development of notable quarterbacks like Robert Griffin III, Bryce Petty, and Case Keenum. As head coach at Tulsa, Montgomery recorded a 43-53 record over eight seasons, achieving a 2-2 record in bowl games and securing the school’s first conference championship in the American Athletic Conference in 2020, though they lost to Cincinnati 27-24.
“Philip Montgomery is one of the most respected offensive minds in college football. His ability to develop quarterbacks and build explosive offenses will be instrumental in our continued growth as a program. Philip’s experience as both a head coach and a coordinator will help us maximize our talent and put our players in the best position to succeed,” Pry said in a release. In 2024, Montgomery served as the offensive coordinator for the UFL’s Birmingham Stallions, who had an impressive 9-1 record and clinched the league’s championship.
The announcement of Montgomery has sparked considerable conversation on social media, with many expressing excitement about the new addition to Virginia Tech’s coaching staff.

Another high-profile addition to Brent Pry’s staff. Montgomery served as the co-offensive coordinator and QB coach during RG3’s time at Baylor (2008-2011). He became the sole OC from 2012-2014, and the Bears led the country in PPG in two of those three seasons. https://t.co/oSx64FkrLu
